Hal's Blog

12//31/07     I have two one person shows for the month of January 2008.  I will have six to eight paintings at the Remax offices, 123 Nashua Road,  Londonderry, NH.  I haven't decided which paintings I will place there.  I will be showing about a dozen paintings at the Webster at Rye, health facility, Washington Road, Rye, NH for the months of January and February 2008.  Paintings can be seen at both locations during normal business hours.  Paintings should be in place by the third of January.

11/22/07     Gus has been in our home one year now.  On Thanksgiving, after dinner, Gus wanted to climb over my son to get at something on the end table.  When he was stopped, he decided to become a lap dog.

10/27/07     Placed two paintings in the SAA Gallery, 167 Water Street, Exeter, NH (see art showing at section).  I also added a couple future show dates.

10/17/07     My two paintings submitted to the Great Bay Science Center for Friday night's art show were juried into the show.  I procrastinated a bit and finished my second painting about 30 minutes before I had to take it to the delivery point.  I haven't uploaded my photos as yet.

The Show runs for this weekend at the Great Bay Science Center in Stratham, New Hampshire.  The Artists' Reception is Friday night a 6:00 PM.

10/14/07     Spent six hours painting the Exeter waterfront for the wet paint auction in Exeter.  I hurt my back about a week ago and the six hours spent on location really did a number on it.  I was unable to attend the auction but my wet paint entry and the two other paintings submitted sold.  I don't know the hammer price,  and I forgot to take my camera so I don't have a photo of  my wet paint entry.

9/24/07     My best buddy, Gus, is now one year old.  He's a wonderful addition to our home.

7/11/07    Performed a demo painting at the Fuller Gardens annual fund raising party.  I decided to change the style of painting, I typically paint at these events.  I painted a more expressionistic painting rather than just what I saw.  The Following is an 11 by 14 inch acrylic.

7/1/07   My painting "Powder House" which was on display at the Folsom Tavern (historical building) in Exeter, NH was chosen as the cover art for the "Seacoast Living" magazine (July-August edition).

6/04/07     Gus and I went painting last weekend.  I painted the little Island in Little Harbor, Portsmouth, NH

The painting is an acrylic 11 by 14 inches.  ( Gus was well behaved during the three hours it took to do most of the painting.  I put finishing touches on it at home)

Little Harbor

The lines in the painting are a fault of the camera and not the painting

4/22/07     My Golden Retriever, Gus, is now six months old and he loves his baths.  When we take off his collar, he knows it's bath time and he runs and jumps into the tub.

Gus photo update.  He's making it difficult to paint.

1/3/07     Happy new year to all.  Gus is now walking down all stairs and my back has been spared.

A couple of glamour shots of Gus just after drying off from his bath:

12/17/06     Below are two pictures of the vampire (Gus) , who is sapping all my energy.  He has to go outside every couple of hours.  He is also making me get up entirely too early in the mornings.  Its also a concern as too whether he will learn to walk down steps before my back gives out carrying him down steps.  However,  he is a dear love and absoutely endearing.

11/25/06     I hope everyone had a delightful Thanksgiving.  I'll have to go back on my diet now.

Our new family member is Gus and he will be demanding a great deal of my time.

Meet Gus:

Gus is the one with his head in the food dish!

10/31/06    I just completed a painting with bright haloween colors (not a haloween subject however).  It's of a pond in Kittery, Maine that I took considerable liberties with.  I hope t he Kittery residents will forgive me.  It's an acrylic painting 16 by 20 inches.

"Kittery Pond"

10/24/06     I've completed a second painting for the Great Bay Science Center Art Show of Great Bay scenes.  The Show will run for the month of November at the Science Center in Stratham, NH.

"Autumn on the Boardwalk"

Pastel, 16 by 20 inches

10/18/06     Yesterday,  I painted a pastel as a demo for the Tara Community Center Artists.  The demo was great fun and they were a great group.  I plan on entering the demo painting in the upcoming art show at the Great Bay Science Center in Stratham, NH.  I had the Tara Artists pick out the scene for me to paint.  Soooo, if the painting is rejected by the show's juror,  it can't be my bad painting but obiviously their choice of subjects.  The following pastel is 16 by 20 inches.

"Boardwalk View"

Pastel, 16 by 20 inches

10/15/06     Painted the Portsmouth Light (once again) looking out from the New Castle Commons.

  Its a Pastel, 12 by 16 inches.

"Gray Day, Kittery Point"

Pastel, 16 by 20 inches.

10/10/06     Went painting with a group of other artists along the York River in York, Maine.  The following is the result of the day's effort.

It's an acrylic 16 by 20 inches

I normally don't paint this large on location.

We were painting next to the George Marshall Store Gallery, in York, Maine, where the amazing art of Connie Hayes is currently featured.  We browsed her show after our painting session and a couple of my fellow painters claimed to be huge fans of hers (me too).  So as a joke, back in my studio, I did another painting of the outing trying to copy Connie Hayes' style.  I'm looking forward the the reaction from my friends when we display our work at tomorrow's get together.

It's an acrylic 12 by 16 inches

The actual painting is not nearly this dark.  I couldn't get it to photograph lighter without a flash which left a bright spot on the image.

9/19/06     The competition at the Rochester Art Fair is getting much tougher.  A number of my friends are now entering and making it much harder to win prizes.  I did manage to squeeze a second place ribbon in marine art out of the judges.  The painting that I thought might have had a chance at a ribbon didn't get one but the one I expected to be a long shot did get the second place.

"New Castle Cottage" will be one of the featured paintings.

8/03/06     I will be at the Kingston, NH art fair this Saturday.  I hope some of you can come by and say hi.

I just completed a pastel of an autumn scene.  Autumn is my favorite season and sitting in my studio the last few days with heat in the nineties (with humidity to match) I long for Sept and October and created a painting to reflect my longing.

Pastel, 11 by 14 inches

7/15/06     Next Saturday is the Heritage Festival in Exeter, NH.  I will be one of a number of artists sharing a canopy displaying our art.  If you can make it by the Swazey Parkway please stop by.  I've been working on some smaller paintings, so I won't have to put as high a price tag on them, for the show.  I just completed the following painting yesterday:

Pastel, 11 by 14 inches

7/13/06     I had started a painting a few days ago at The Fuller Gardens to finish up last night as my demo painting.  However, the event was rained out so I decided to do more work on the painting and then leave it as a partially completed vienette.  The following pastel is of the well in the Fuller Gardens:

SOLD

7/12/06     Sorry folks.  The Fuller Gardens art auction and demos are cancelled for tonight.  It's an out door event and the rains are coming.  We are not sure when the event can be rescheduled.

7/06/06     I'm always searching for the perfect support and surface for my pastel paintings.  I like a firm support and not floated paper.  Glued paper is not always satisfactory.  I'm experimenting with canvas on masonite with several coats of gesso to cover the canvas texture and then a layer of gesso and pumice or marble dust.  The following painting was on this surface but I don't seem to have filled the canvas texture sufficiently.  I had difficulty in getting a smooth line.

"Fishing Pier, Portsmouth"  11 by 14 inches

6/27/06     While painting at Fort Constitution last week, I took some reference photos of the fort and lighthouse.  I was down on the rocks just above the high tide line but it was too rugged an area to set up my easel.  Also my old knees couldn't handle the large steps and jumps while carrying a lot of gear.  It was really a lovely scene.  My finished pastel, from the reference photo, follows (11 by 14 inches).

6/25/06     Finished a painting started at Fort Constitution in  New Castle a few days ago.  Its a pastel painting of the Parade Ground inside Fort Constitution.

6/19/06     Put final touches on a plein air painting started last week on the causeway between Portsmouth, NH and New Castle, NH.  It is looking south across of the water way.   Acrylic on stretched canvas, 12 by 16 inches.

SOLD

6/14/06     My painting "Ice and Fuel",  of the fishing pier in Portsmouth, NH, was juried into the Prescott Summer Art Show at the Sheafe Warehouse Gallery in Portsmouth, NH.  It will be on display during the months July and August.  I will also be able to display some of my original work (unframed) during the show.

6/8/06     I spent a second day painting at the Strawbery Banke (that's the way they spell it).  The Cooper's Shed had two volunteers, in costume, conversing and they became the focus of my painting.  The result of the day follows:

I subsequently donated the painting to the Cooper at Strawbery Banke.

6/03/06     Alewife Festival postponed until tomorrow and tomorrow is still ify.  Finished a pastel painting started in Strawbery Banke a few days ago.  The painting is of the arch in the Aldrich Garden.

5/24/06     The weather has improved and Tuesday, I painted plein air in Portsmouth, NH (Little Harbor).  A rustic building caught my attention and of course the spring colors of the trees.  Its a pastel 14 by 18 inches:
